Fifth grade student Allison Shaver was honored by the Yamhill chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) in the American History essay competition.

Allison wrote a piece with this year’s theme celebrating 100 years of America’s national parks.  Her essay, written in the form of a journal, was about a trip to Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico.  Allison tied with another area student for the honor.

Allison was recognized by the DAR along with McMinnville High School senior Junior Bautista and Duniway teacher Jeremy Hurl.

Junior was recognized with the DAR Good Citizen Award, which honors the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism to an outstanding degree.

Hurl was named Outstanding Teacher of American History for both the local chapter and the state of Oregon. He will be honored for the state award in May. The award recognizes a current teacher who fosters a spirit of patriotism and support for the U.S. constitutional government and who demonstrates an ability to relate history to modern life and events.
